The heart of the city in ancient Greece was the marketplace, the agora. This was where social life took place. Literally, agora also means gathering place. Socrates was not the only one who spent time in the agora, bombarding people with philosophical questions. Men of all kinds came here to relax, exchange news, attend the popular assembly and be taught by various philosophers. Meanwhile, the work was done by women and slaves.
